Albany-Based Arena Football League Team Names Les Moss Assistant Head Coach

The Albany-based Arena Football League team has named Les Moss as their assistant coach. Moss was the head coach of the Jacksonville Sharks from 2010-2016.

Over his career, he has won four ArenaBowl titles, his latest coming with the Sharks in 2011. In 2010, he earned the AFL Coach of the Year award.

“The type of experience that Coach Moss brings to the team is invaluable,” Albany head coach Rob Keefe said on his new assistant. “Nobody has more experience coaching in this league than Les, and has been a proven winner at every stop. I’m thrilled to have him in Albany as we continue to put together a championship caliber staff.”

“I am excited about the opportunity in Albany,” Moss said. “As the defensive coordinator for the Orlando Predators in 1999, I witnessed first-hand how passionate the Albany AFL fanbase was at ArenaBowl XIII. I am thrilled to be on their side this season!”

Albany was named the league’s sixth team on Oct. 24. They also have other former coaches on their staff, including Rob Keefe and Chris Thompson, who will serve as the offensive coordinator and Director of Football Operations for the team.

They have yet to pick a name for the team, but they have announced they will host open tryouts in January. Albany will play home games at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY.

Jacksonville Sharks 2016 Season in Review

The 2016 Jacksonville Sharks season featured few ups and several downs. On the field, they were a disappointment. As one of the odds-on ArenaBowl favorites, the Sharks needed to rally to finish 7-9, and fell in the American Conference championship game to the Philadelphia Soul. Off the field, fans and insiders were questioning if the team would even exist after the conclusion of the season.

In what’s become a regular scheduling quirk since Jacksonville came into the League, the Sharks opened up on the road (yes, in their history, the Sharks have never played at home Week 1). This year’s opponent was the revamped Los Angeles KISS, featuring several players from the now-defunct San Jose Sabercats. As was the case in the third quarter in Stockton, the Sharks couldn’t get out of their own way, and the team stumbled to a 64-39 loss.

Recovering with a win in the state that would end their season four months later, Jacksonville then lost three of their next four (including a 75-68 loss to the Arizona Rattlers, the first overtime game in franchise history) to limp into their first bye week at 2-4.

Going into Week 8, head coach Les Moss was already on the hot seat, and wide receiver Joe Hills not only continued his 2015 form, but forced opposing defenses to plan for him week in and week out. Rumors quelled thanks to two straight wins off the bye.

Hills had a career and franchise night against the Orlando Predators in Week 9, hauling in a team record eight touchdowns in what was considered an upset win despite the talent on both teams. Hills was on his way to his first-ever 2,000 yard season that won him First Team All-Arena, Wide Receiver of the Year, and Offensive Player of the Year honors, thanks in large part to leading the league in receptions (161, a franchise record), yards (2,020), and touchdowns (58).

As quickly as fires died out, they reignited after Week 12, when a home loss to the Predators, facing both Randy Hippeard and former teammate Bernard Morris under center due to Hippeard’s season-ending injury, sparked a four-game losing streak that included another one-point loss to the Cleveland Gladiators (which would cost them dearly come playoff time), a two-point loss in Arizona, and a loss to one-win Portland.

The one-point loss to Cleveland was the second time during the season that the Sharks gave up a double digit lead to the Gladiators in a loss (they blew a 19-point lead in a 41-40 loss to them in Week 6).

By the time the July 4 League-wide bye came around, Moss was almost out the door, and there were even more questions surrounding then Managing Partner Jeff Bouchy surrounding payments of league dues and the stability and future of the franchise for 2017 and beyond.

Following the Week 16 loss, the on-field questions got answered when Moss was given his walking papers, and offensive line coach Bob Landsee took over to finish the season. There were immediate dividends, as the Sharks won two in a row to head to the playoffs.

During what was a surprising postseason run, off the field issues came to a resolution with a new ownership plan coming into place, and Bouchy seeing a demotion to Operating Manager. On the field, the Sharks and Predators played yet another classic.

Jacksonville came back from two scores down in the first half to nearly tie the game at halftime, then used a missed extra point to force overtime, where they won a playoff game for the fifth time in six seasons.

While the Sharks have new owners, they still need a new coach, a possibly reorganized front office, and a team that has both the talent to compete and can perform well enough to give Jacksonville their first home playoff game since 2013. Will Joe Hills and other top offensive players stick around? Can Jacksonville convince Joe Sykes to come back and anchor the defense? Will 2017 finally be the season where Jacksonville will live up to their potential?

In short, it was an interesting four months, and we’re in store for an even more interesting five or six months this offseason.

2016 Week 17 Preview: Sharks vs KISS

The Los Angeles KISS (7-7) will play their final road trip of the regular season starting on Saturday when they take on the Jacksonville Sharks (5-9) at Veterans Memorial Arena. The KISS made a statement in the first game of the season when they played the Sharks, as they defeated the 2015 ArenaBowl runner up 64-39, and that could’ve jumpstarted the Sharks never-ending turmoil.

Jacksonville fired head coach Les Moss, after losing four straight games, including last week to the two-win Portland Steel. Jacksonville is entering the first game of the Bob Landsee era, as the team will try to finish the season strong before the playoffs begin in three weeks.

Los Angeles has won three of their last four games, and they’ve used the third quarter to their advantage. Los Angeles has outscored opponents 27-0 in the last two third quarters, and that’s a testament to their defense. The KISS defense ranks first in points allowed, and they’ve had phenomenal performances against the Tampa Bay Storm, as they’ve only allowed 48 combined points to Tampa Bay this season.

Jacksonville might’ve lost four straight games, but they definitely have the offense that could get them out of this massive slump. Quarterback Tommy Grady has thrown for 4,061 yards and 82 touchdowns. He has completed 67.6% of his pass attempts, and he has posted a quarterback rating of 125.0. Grady’s biggest weapon has been Joe Hills, who is having a remarkable season. Hills leads the league in receptions (146), yards (1,859), and touchdowns (51).

Grady has another reliable weapon in Tiger Jones, who has caught 94 passes for 1,095 yards and 16 touchdowns. Fullback Derrick Ross has had another fantastic season, as he leads the league carries (88), yards (325), and touchdowns (17).

The defense has been led by Greg Reid, who leads the team in interceptions (8), and tackles (81.5). The KISS enter with a .500 record because of a consistent offense and stout defense. Despite being out for a good chunk of the season, quarterback Nathan Stanley has put up stellar numbers. Stanley has completed 184 of his 313 pass attempts, for 2,051 yards and 41 touchdowns.

His top target has been Donovan Morgan, who has caught 88 passes for 1,215 yards and 38 touchdowns. The defense has been led by Fredrick Obi, who leads the team in interceptions (5), and tackles (78.5). If Jacksonville wants to bounce back, they’ll need to limit Morgan, and they’ll need to pressure Stanley. Los Angeles will need to force turnovers, and limit penalties.

8. Tampa Bay Storm

The Storm are now at the bottom of the league with one lone win. They have place good football this season, but there have also been games where they have been blown out. At this point, the Storm are just looking to finish the season on a high note.

7. Portland Steel

The Steel got their second win of the season last night against the Sharks. Still, it’s only win #2. The Steel have played this season with two different quarterbacks and just can’t seem to get anything going.

6. Jacksonville Sharks

If the Steel weren’t a two-win, and tje Storm weren’t a one-win team, the Sharks would be the worst team in the league. They have played awful football all season long. They’ve lost a double-digit lead to the Gladiators twice, they have struggled against the Storm, and have now fired head coach Les Moss. The only possible reason he’s not gone yet could be because the Sharks hand beaten the top team in the league in the Predators.

5. Cleveland Gladiators

The Gladiators have put together one of the best teams in the league. Unfortunately, they have not been able to keep their record at .500. They have now lost two straight games and have lost their chance at hosting a home playoff game for now.

4. Los Angeles KISS

This has been the best season in KISS franchise history in many ways. One is after winning four games in their first two seasons, they currently sit at a 7-7 record and are in the driver’s seat to host a playoff game in just a couple weeks.

3. Philadelphia Soul

The Soul defense showed why they are one of the best, if not the best, in the league in their win over the Storm. Quarterback Dan Raudabaugh may have struggled in the game, but overall this season, he has shown that he could win his second consecutive MVP.

2. Arizona Rattlers

The Rattlers were just two points from taking the top spot in the Arena Football League after their 62-45 win last night over the Predators. The Rattlers needed to beat the Predators by 19 points to take the top. Unfortunately, they were only able to win by 17. While that is an impressive win, it’s not enough for the #1 overall seed.

1. Orlando Predators

The Predators lost to Arizona last night, but they currently own the #1 overall seed over the Soul and Rattlers. The Predators have off in Week 17, as do the Soul, but the two meet in the final week. A Predators win guarantees them a #1 overall seed heading into the postseason.
