2017 Arena Football League Mid-Season Takeaways

We are at the midpoint of the season and what we thought we knew we kind of did know. The Soul are tough. Winning a title helps and this team kept their core, but they did lose Jake Metz to the NFL and the Buffalo Bills, but when that kind of thing happens, it only confirms how good the Soul are at producing talent.

The Tampa Bay Storm are right there with the Soul, except for a controversial replay review in Week 2 and the Storm’s only loss of the season in a 52-56 game vs that very same Soul team.

So there is a good argument to say the Storm are actually the best team.  Their 6-1 start is the best in team history since the 2001 season. That ended with the Storm losing five  their last eight games, including a 37 point playoff loss to Indiana in the first round. From watching both of the top teams in person vs the Gladiators, the edge still belongs to the Soul.

Over and over again on the same drive, Dan Raudabaugh would launch the ball deep on a vert call, and Cleveland, a team that is known to develop good defensive backs, was unable to stop being burnt deep.

Now comes the tough part of evaluating the rest of the league.  Even if one were to add up their wins on the season (5), their total is still one short of the Storm’s win total. So who is the next team that could give the Soul or Storm a fight?  Defense wins championships, but in arena football, an offense that scores 60 plus usually will prevail no matter what they have on the other side of the ball.

Cleveland leads the league in scoring by a couple touchdowns (plus the extra points) with 430 points on the season and they are 99 points better than the Brigade and 156 points better than the Valor.  The Glads also lead the league in third down conversion percentage and are second on fourth down only to the Soul by less than two percent.

Cleveland also has the top rusher in the league, Arvell Nelson (166) and top receiver, Quentin Sims (867).  The Glads also had the leading kick returner Brandon Thompkins until he was traded to the Brigade.

That leads nicely into the Baltimore Brigade, a team that seemed truly lost in the opening game of the season, having to switch quarterbacks in the middle of the game in favor of Shane Carden, who has averaged 267.5 passing yards per game as a starter and has thrown at least five touchdowns in each game, while only throwing one or no inceptions in four of those six starts.

The addition of Thompkins is huge and helps make up for the loss of Reggie Gray. With the late start of getting this franchise off the ground, the path to a good season really could be on the defensive side of the ball where would they might be gaining an edge on the competition.  Head Coach Omarr Smith is a defensive expert who had 35 interceptions of his own during his playing days.  Leading the way for this team up front, Khreem Smith has had a sack in every game he has played this season and leads the league in sacks with seven.

So that leaves the Washington Valor. The momentum that came with having a top notch arena seems to have faded. Having only one win on the season, firing your defensive coordinator in his first season, and being the only team Cleveland has been able to beat this season are all bad things.

Some numbers suggest even the Valor are getting better. Washington ranks first in Massey Ratings system on defense, plus defesive back Tracy Belton is one of only two players in the league to force three interceptions and return one for a score.

Baltimore Brigade Come Back to Beat Cleveland Gladiators, 63-60

‪The Baltimore Brigade hosted the Cleveland Gladiators at the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore on Saturday night. Both teams were riding long losing streaks and were looking for their second win of the season.‬

‪The Gladiators struck first when Arvell Nelson found Quentin Sims for a touchdown. Following a Shane Carden interception, Sims’ second touchdown of the game gave Cleveland a 12-0 lead (they missed both extra points.)‬

‪The Brigade would get on the board when Carden found Milton Williams for a touchdown to make the score 12-7. That would prove to be the score at the end of the first quarter.‬

‪Sims third touchdown of the first half would give Cleveland and 18-7 lead (they once again missed the extra point.) The Brigade wouldn’t go down that easy, however. After a back and forth second quarter, the Gladiators led 32-28.‬

‪Baltimore took their first lead when Williams scored his third touchdown of the night. Cleveland would respond with Sims fourth touchdown reception of the game. The Glads took the 39-34 lead into the fourth quarter.‬

‪Down 53-49 with just one minute left, Carden threw a touchdown to Williams, his fourth, to give them a 56-53 lead. After running back Jeramie Richardson scored to give the Gladiators a 60-56 lead, new Brigade Brandon Thompkins returned the ensuing kick all the way for a touchdown to give Baltimore a 63-60 lead. ‬

‪Cleveland would fail to score on the final 30 seconds, giving the Brigade the win. The win for Baltimore snaps a three-game losing streak. They will travel to take on the Tampa Bay Storm next weekend.

The loss for Cleveland has them at a four-game losing streak. They’re also tied for the worst record in the league with the Washington Valor at 1-5. The two teams will meet at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. next Saturday night. The game will be broadcasted on CBS Sports Network.

Cleveland Gladiators Add Quarterback Danny Southwick, Wide Receiver Troy Pascley

The Cleveland Gladiators have added quarterback Danny Southwick and wide receiver Troy Pascley. The move evens out Cleveland’s roster out after trading Brandon Thompkins and Shane Boyd to the Baltimore Brigade on Monday.

Southwick, 35, will be entering his seventh AFL season and second run with the Glads after playing in one game for them during the 2013 regular season. Southwick has thrown for over 6,000 yards and 113 touchdowns so far in his AFL career.

In 2008, he saw some time with the Oakland Raiders. Last season, Southwick started the first three games of the season for the Portland Steel, throwing for a total of 751 yards and 13 touchdowns during the whole season.

Pascley, 28, will be entering his rookie AFL season. A native of Alliance, Pascley played his college ball at University of Louisville as a wide receiver. Pascley appeared in 19 games for the Cardinals. Pascley scored four touchdowns and earned 297 yards on completions.

Arvell Nelson has once again found a rhythm at the quarterback position, making Boyd expendable. Nelson is leading the AFL in rushing with 155 yards, Nelson’s 8.2 yards per carry also ranks tops in the league among anyone with at least 10 attempts.

Collin Taylor should expect to see a big jump in playing time with the departure of Thompkins. Taylor has caught four passes or less in three of his last four games and is yet to catch for over 100 yards in any game this season.

After scoring at least one touchdown in every game during the 2016 regular season, Taylor has already seen two games without a score in just his first six games despite averaging over 70 yards per game.

The Gladiators have also been assigned Defensive Back Damond Smith who has appeared in two games so far this season, ironically both when facing Cleveland as a member of the Tampa Bay Storm. Smith has not seen action since week three.

Cleveland has also placed offensive lineman Joe Madsen and defensive back Terry Johnson on reassignment.

Cleveland Gladiators Offensive Coordinator Siaha Burley Steps Down

Five games into a new position and Siaha Burley is stepping down from his duties as offensive coordinator of the Cleveland Gladiators. Burley will become Head Coach of the 8-0 Jacksonville Sharks, who are playing in their first season as members of the National Arena League

This Cleveland team was expected to be one of the best this season and yet, this season they are 1-5 and currently out of the playoffs.

Cleveland is averaging 8.6 penalties per game. The Glads are scoring 51.8 points per game, but that’s only in front of the two expansion teams. Burley was in the middle of his first season in Cleveland and his sixth overall in the AFL.

In 2005, Burley as a player set a franchise record with 45 receiving touchdowns with the Arizona Rattlers. Burley, played for a total of four teams in the AFL totalling up 10,810 yards receiving , good for 12th most all time and catching 247 touchdowns, good enough for 11th best in AFL history.

As a coach Burley was a member of five franchises with his top award being named 2015 Assistant Coach of the Year, while a coach with the Orlando Predators. A team that also had Brandon Thompkins as one of their star players (1,266 yards receiving and 23 receiving touchdowns) logic would seem that Burley’s hiring had a lot to do with Thompkins coming to Cleveland.

Thompkins along with quarterback Shane Boyd were traded to the Baltimore Brigade yesterday for future considerations. With all the excitement around this team this season and the activity of the last couple of days, some may see it as a perceived white flag. However, Cleveland can take the last playoff spot away (for the moment) from the team they just traded with when they travel to Baltimore this Saturday.

The game is the national game of the week and can be seen on CBS Sports Network at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be only Baltimore’s second home game of the season, but with the football rivalry with Cleveland in the outdoor game, this game should matter to a lot already.
